I really appreciate the fact that he used a slight British accent. A lot of folks don’t realize that they spoke that way back then. As kids, you just think that everyone back then spoke like we do in America with our current accent. No one teaches you that.

Giving this award to the author of a book apparently lauding Jefferson seems odd. I don't think President Washington, in his last years in office or after his return to Mount Vernon in retirement, would have been inclined to give Jefferson an award for anything. ...other than perhaps an award for duplicity.

A federal navy was one of the contributing factors to our formation of a union. A nation’s strength must be sufficient to secure a seat at the victor’s table, only there is future prosperity determined.

  • @MloveT-ts4qj

Always knew theough common sense that Washington's family was British..why? The US was young, the first pilgrims to the US were protestant Christian Britons ( some perhaps protestant Christian Dutch) , and obviously Washington was the very first president in US history. ( Although it seems that his ancestors were not a part of the British pilgrims )

These "necessaries " or out houses would sometimes use wood ash and/or straw sprinkled onto after each use. This controlled odor and help facilitate composting. Chamber pots used indoors at night (under bed or in a toilet box) would be filled with water before bed and a handful of wood ash from the hearth/fireplace stirred in to control odor during the night. Next morning the chamber pot was emptied into the outdoor "necessary". A separate smaller chamber pot was used for urine as it was collected to make ammonia for laundry (removal of stains on white linens) Days long before chlorine bleach.

Candles in those days were made mostly of rendered animal tallow from hard suet fat around the kidneys of cattle. Bee's wax and to lesser extent bayberry wax candles were reserved for church service and special occasions like Christmas. Tallow candles did not burn clean or smelled good and tallow melted faster than the wick where as other wax fuels melted at same rate as wicks. About every 10-15 minutes or so a wick trimmer was used otherwise black soot would drop onto white table cloths and float around room ending up on surfaces. The candle wick trimmers look like a pair of scissors with a little box on one side of blades. The box was to collect the trimmed charred wicks and snuff the flame and the blade cut the wick. The tip of blade was heated in flame and applied to wax/ tallow puddle to facilitate the excess wax/tallow to flow down to be collected and reused. A feature on some candle suffer trimmers is a circular opening between base of blades and the finger loops.. This was to fit the circumference of candle to scrape the wax drippings. Little was wasted in those days!
